John 3:5-6 ESV
5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Water is a common metaphor for mankind. Perhaps part of what Jesus refers to is our purpose and God's plan. We journey through flesh and spirit to find and join God. Jesus has shown the way. He has gone to the Father in a new and immortal body. He waits beside the Father until it's time to join Him. At that time flesh and spirit come together, as with Jesus. God with us.
