Began

Genesis 9:20 ESV

20 Then Noah began farming and planted a vineyard.

Behind this word translated here as began is the idea of a decline, of a growing distance between Noah and God, between the sacred and profane. Noah begins with one thing that leads to another. First farming, then planting a vineyard, drinking of the wine and ending up drunk. Because he was drunk, he ended up in a shameful state. He then cursed his son who did not act wisely when encountering his shameful state. 

There some sense here of digging a hole and falling into it.
