Numbers 1:53 ESV
53 But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the people of Israel. And the Levites shall keep guard over the tabernacle of the testimony.”
The other tribes of Israel are numbered to fight for and protect Israel. The Levites are set aside to protect the people as well, keeping them safe from the judgement of God through ongoing atonement for sin. The tabernacle of the testimony was central to their life.
