In The World

Romans 5:13-14 ESV
13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.

Sin and death were present, but were not counted against the people without the law. The law was given, and it made the people sin all the more. The law was good, but it only was able to expose our weakness.

Life comes from faith. Receiving the law was a fearsome thing, but it was a necessary step for faith and the law of liberty. Receiving Jesus is an awesome thing and is a necessary step for entrance into the kingdom of God. Without being clothed in His righteousness, we remain exposed in the nakedness of our sin. It was in this state that Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden. The law can be likened to the animal skins which, God in His mercy, clothed them in the world. They were temporary garments until heavenly clothing could be acquired.
