He Would Not Drink It

Matthew 27:34-36 ESV
34 they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. 35 And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots. 36 Then they sat down and kept watch over him there.

The cup His Father had given Him He drank willingly, with no trace of bitterness.
The the offer from the world is wine laced with gall, a bitter, but numbing drink. Jesus may have been tempted even here at the last to feel bitter. He had good reason.  He had been rejected, mocked, and nailed to a cross, but He was faithful to the end.
The cup the world offers is different than the one lifted in Jesus' hand when He said "drink". He offers the wine of the new covenant. It is the perfect cup, containing grace offered in love. The sweetness of forgiveness remains on the tongue long after we drink.
