Galatians 4:28-31 ESV
Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. But just as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now. But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.” So, brothers, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman.
The flesh has always been at odds with the Spirit. This takes place within the believer, a frequent battle of will which requires patience and perseverance. We are born according to the flesh and reborn according to the Spirit. Light has entered our darkness and we are exposed to the knowledge of good and evil. The ensuing struggle is part of the ongoing separation between light and darkness revealed in the creation account in Genesis.
Our charge is to cast out the slave woman of our flesh for the freedom of the promise. This is a current and personal struggle for every son of God. Christ overcame the world. Through our faith, He lends His strength to us that we might be more than conquerors.
