Romans 7:8-9 ESV
But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. For apart from the law, sin lies dead. I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died.
Sin had no life until the law was given. There was no consequence to sin until the law came. It was present, but we were unaccountable without the law.
Then sin was revealed and came alive, bringing death to mankind. It continues to plunder the world of those ignorant and unsuspecting. Once the law came we are without excuse. Our downfall is the knowledge of good and evil. But that knowledge allows us to choose between the two. This is the difference between night and day.
Once the Son of Man came into the world the good news of God's grace is the final word of creation. Sin has been defeated. We who were once dead now live. From darkness to light and from death to life, we are reborn into the life of the Spirit.
The day will come and the night will be over.
