Exodus 20:18 NASB
All the people perceived the thunder and the lightning flashes and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood at a distance.
They could not stand before The Lord. God had yet to allow the fellowship to come, for the people were not ready. They had not been cleansed by the word of The Lord.
They stood at a distance and were glad of it. The fire that had descended on that mountain was bright and hot and loud and fearsome.
Later, the fire of the Holy Spirit would descend on the believers at the Day of Pentecost. The distance would grow smaller as The Lord drew near. We can now stand in His presence.
