It Is Finished - John 19:28-30

John 19:28-30 ESV

After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

The work of paying the price of our sin has come to its end. The jar full of sour wine signifies the cup of wrath that He drinks on our behalf. The hyssop branch was used in the ritual sprinkling in the temple and indicates the meaning of sacrifice. The culmination of all sacrifice by the Israelites had pointed to and foreshadowed the sacrifice of Christ for the atonement of man.

How marvelous and beautiful are the words "It is finished." God has done the work of salvation. It is now our anointing to follow Him in our walk with Him until we reach our journey's end and are able to speak those same words of triumph. He is with us and has prepared the way. He is the way.

Come to me, all who thirst and drink the living water which goes forth into all the earth.
