Worship Me - Mark 7:1-7. Wed 2/13/13

Mark 7:1-7 ESV
Now when the Pharisees gathered to him, with some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem, they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands properly, holding to the tradition of the elders, and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as the washing of cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.) And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written,
“‘This people honors me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me;
in vain do they worship me,
teaching as doctrines the commandments of men. ’

People often define something differently. Words come to mean different things to different people. Even God means different things to different people. However, God is one and is changeless. His word does not change and endures forever.

That is why it is important to stay in His word, His whole council. Do not write your own book, or dismiss parts you find disagreeable. Seek out what God teaches. It will be found.

1 Samuel 12:21
And do not turn aside after empty things that cannot profit or deliver, for they are empty.

Malachi 3:14-15
You have said, ‘It is vain to serve God. What is the profit of our keeping his charge or of walking as in mourning before the Lord of hosts? And now we call the arrogant blessed. Evildoers not only prosper but they put God to the test and they escape. ’”

Matthew 15:9
in vain do they worship me,
teaching as doctrines the commandments of men. ’”

Titus 3:9-11
But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self- condemned.
