By Faith We Understand

Hebrews 11:1-3 (NIV)
1 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
2 This is what the ancients were commended for.
3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

The creation story in Genesis is not given as a scientific treatise of how it happened, but why. Science is able at times to figure out some particulars, but the view is limited by the tools at hand and schools of thought. The Hubble telescope expanded our universe only in the sense of the one who sees.

Understanding incremental facts adds to “our” universe, but creation belongs to God. Faith allows us to leap beyond and ahead to the answer of the ultimate question. Facts do not and cannot substitute for meaning. It is by faith we understand.
