Acts 18:24-25 ESV
Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, competent in the Scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord. And being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John.
It is possible to experience the baptism of repentance and not know the baptism of the Holy Spirit. To know the way of the Lord with a sincere and eager heart, and yet not know the Lord in an intimate relationship.
John Wesley, the father of Methodist denomination, is an excellent example of this phenomenon. He was well into his ministry of spreading the gospel before the gospel finally reached his heart. He felt a “strange warming” of the heart when this happened when he was sealed in the assurance of his salvation by receiving of the Holy Spirit.
Knowing the baptism of John only leads to the baptism of Jesus Christ. That is the endgame and the will of God.
