A Deep Sleep - Genesis 15:12

Genesis 15:12 ESV

As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram. And behold, dreadful and great darkness fell upon him.

Matthew 26:42-43

Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.

There is a connection between these two events. God made a unilateral covenant with Abraham while he was in a deep sleep. Walking between the animal carcasses, God was saying that He would die if He did not fulfill this promise to Abraham.

If we fast forward to the time of Jesus in the garden just before His crucifixion, we see the disciples asleep while Jesus confirms His sacrifice to death for those who like Abraham will place their faith in Him.

Both events signify a unilateral covenant by God for someone of faith. Abraham is the father of faith and we are His descendants of faith. It is faith in the word of God that brings us into His salvation.

We awake from our slumber in the darkness to new life in the Father of lights.
