John 1:1-5 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God.
All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Christ tells us that He is the beginning and the end. John confirms that He is God. He created the heavens and earth. God announces His purpose with the first words of creation.
"Let there be light."
That light is the life of men, which comes from the Father of lights. That light would take the form of the flesh of man, yet would contain the life of God. There it would shine in the darkness in the midst of men, never to be extinguished. It will grow until the whole world sees and comprehends the light.
As children of light we are to walk in the light until we cast off this mortal body and fully enter that light.
