Isaiah 6:11-13 ESV
Then I said, “How long, O Lord?”
And he said:
“Until cities lie waste
without inhabitant,
and houses without people,
and the land is a desolate waste,
and the Lord removes people far away,
and the forsaken places are many in the midst of the land.
And though a tenth remain in it,
it will be burned again,
like a terebinth or an oak,
whose stump remains
when it is felled.”
The holy seed is its stump.
Isaiah asks the Lord how long will Israel lie in waste. There is hope for the nation which rests in the holy seed brought forth through its people. They were given the burden of bearing the light to all people, but the burden proved too much for them. Like Adam in the Garden, they failed to obey the Lord.
Though Israel and Adam proved disobedient, it was through their lineage that the Holy One would come who would perfectly obey God. That seed would become the "stump" or the holy foundation upon which the will of God would find fruition. God would use them in His plan to provide a Savior for mankind, Who would in turn become the Rock of Zion.
The seed becomes the stump of a better covenant.
