He Shall Make Atonement

Leviticus 16:33-34 ESV
33 He shall make atonement for the holy sanctuary, and he shall make atonement for the tent of meeting and for the altar, and he shall make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the assembly.
34 And this shall be a statute forever for you, that atonement may be made for the people of Israel once in the year because of all their sins.” And Moses did as the Lord commanded him.

The Holy place was defiled with the sins of the people that came to meet and worship God. The high priest would make atonement to cleanse that place and the people.
This prepares the way for understanding of what Jesus did and does. He is the one sacrifice for all that cleanses the temple, which is the heart of man. This allows the Spirit to dwell in you and me.
He took upon Himself our sins, and like the scapegoat led into the wilderness, removed sin as far as East is from West from the children of God, for His righteousness has become ours.
