What Are You Looking For?

“God is the only comfort. He is also the supreme terror: the thing we most need and the thing we most want to hide from.

“In religion, and in war and everything else, comfort is the one thing you cannot get by looking for it. If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end: if you look for comfort you will get either comfort or truth—only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin with and, in the end, despair.

C.S Lewis, Mere Christianity

Lewis speaks to paradox of God and reminds that our God is more than some small feel-good construction of our own thinking and design. He is God Almighty. All of creation burst into being by His Word. He is just, pure, and beautiful. We are not. We are marred by sin. That is why He is the thing we need most, yet we tend to run away and hide.

But, He made a way for us to come to Him. The need to hide from God is removed. The terror of our sin before God is no longer justified. Jesus came to pay the penalty of our sin, which was death. In doing so He gave us life. In this life are comfort, joy, and peace.

We must be careful and mindful of what we seek. God is what we most need. If we seek Him first, everything else we need will come. Let us not settle for anything less.
