Stand

Revelation 6:17 ESV
17 for the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”

The Greek word here denotes an active and upright position. No one will be able to stand before the Lord on their own. Standing with Him is quite different.

Another similar Greek word transliterated is titheme, which means "to place" in a passive posture. This must be connected somehow with our word tithe, when we give back to the Lord of that which He has given us.

ἵστημι * histēmi * his'-tay-mee * A prolonged form of a primary word στάω staō (of the same meaning, and used for it in certain tenses); to stand (transitively or intransitively), used in various applications (literally or figuratively): - abide, appoint, bring, continue, covenant, establish, hold up, lay, present, set (up), stanch, stand (by, forth, still, up).
