Under The Alter - Revelation 6:9-11

Revelation 6:9-11 ESV

When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne. They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers should be complete, who were to be killed as they themselves had been.

These souls under the alter must be the saints of Israel. The Church is not under an altar, but seated with God and with crowns of life. God has not abandoned Israel, nor forgotten her. A little while remains until the time of the wrath of God is fulfilled and the full number has paid the price, just as the many fell in the desert wilderness long ago. They will be restored once the wrath passes.

They witnessed to the word of God, bearing the oracles of God through the wilderness and into the promised land. Their testimony is about God. The testimony of the Church is about Jesus Christ.
