Luke 9:35 ESV
a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my Son,my Chosen One; listen to him!
The word rendered here as chosen is the Greek word transliterated below. It carries the sense of a word given. Later, John opens his gospel with the proclamation that Jesus is the Word of God and is God.
On this mountain, God shows the disciples the authority of Jesus. Though Elijah and Moses appear with Jesus in the transfigured state, God speaks from the cloud and plainly tells them to listen to His Son. The other two disappear.
This helps cement their understanding of Christ. He is to have preeminence. Everything revealed previously spoke of Him, and all things are given to Him. They have prepared the way of the Lord with the expectation of His coming, giving way to the Holy One of God.
