Cleft Of The Rock - Exodus 33:18-23

Exodus 33:18-23 ESV

Moses said, “Please show me your glory.”
And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The Lord.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.
But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.”
And the Lord said, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock,
and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by.
Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen.”

God chooses Moses to proclaim God and set His people free from the slavery in Egypt, but does not allow him to see His face. This would not be possible until Jesus appeared on earth and we choose to be like Him, as sons of God.

Man must die to self to live in Jesus. A man that does not die to self will just die. The man that chooses Jesus will never die.

He then hints to Moses of His coming mercy and grace that would come through the Son and would be available to the whole world. We can take comfort in the fact He has chosen to be gracious and merciful to all that would choose Him.

He is our rock and we find safe passage to God when we enter the body of Christ which is the rock of our salvation. He covers us with His cleansing blood until the wrath of God passes by.

We will see Him face to face and we will be like Him.
