Genesis 1:2 ESV
The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.
Without God, the natural state of the world is darkness. This is the way He began. It is into this darkness that God spoke His light into creation. He is injecting Himself to fill the emptiness and formless shape of a world without the light of God.
History is the unfolding of that light in the context of time. The light itself is timeless as God is timeless, and therefore the beginning and the end.
In the end the earth will be full of His light and creation will be complete.
