The Branch - Isaiah 11:1-3

Isaiah 11:1-3 NASB
Righteous Reign of the Branch
 Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse,
And a branch from his roots will bear fruit.
 The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him,
The spirit of wisdom and understanding,
The spirit of counsel and strength,
The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
 And He will delight in the fear of the Lord,
And He will not judge by what His eyes see,
Nor make a decision by what His ears hear;

The Greek word translated here as shoot can also mean rod. We might be reminded that from this tender shoot will come a rod of iron to rule the nations.

The word translated here as stem could have been translated as stump. We might be reminded when John the Baptist would later speak to Israel of the axe that had already been applied to the tree that would not bear fruit.

Out of that stump would come a branch that would bear fruit.

The Holy Spirit of The Lord will be given and remain on this man. The effect on the spirit of the man is profound. The Spirit is joined with the spirit of man. He will delight in this knowledge of The Lord which is part of knowing The Lord. The natural response is joy and praise.

He will not judge as a man but a man of God, the Son of Man.
