The Good Wine -John 2:6-12

John 2:6-12 ESV
Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. 9 When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.
12 After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.

Six jars are used in this first miracle, or sign, we see in John's gospel. We remember that in the Genesis God completed all of the cosmos in six days and it was on the sixth day that man was created. The number of jars may point to the cleansing of the world and man that would and will be accomplished by the sacrifice to come of God's own Son.

The water in these jars was used for purification rites by the Jewish nation to make themselves acceptable to God. In a sense, God used the Israelites to purify, or make people ready for the One able to truly cleanse a man. He would turn the water of the Old Covenant into the wine of the New Covenant. It would be for nations, all mankind.

Jesus reveals His divinity and glory before the disciples, and they believed. At the outset of His ministry, Jesus shows us a picture of what will take place as the result of His coming. He offers this wine to all at His first appearance. Those that accept will lift their cups to The Lord at His next appearance, the wedding banquet of the Bride of Christ. It will be a family affair.

Isaiah 25:6-8
On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples
a feast of rich food, a feast of well- aged wine,
of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined.
