John 3:1-8 ESV
1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again. ’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
Nicodemus is drawn to the light of Jesus. Though a ruler of the Jewish people, he walks in the darkness of the world. He is a good man, as men go, but the Spirit was outside his heart, yet calling to him.
In the signs performed by Jesus, Nicodemus is able to hear the Spirit moving, able to hear the voice, but unable to make out the words.
Without being a part of the Spirit, one cannot understand Spirit words. Nicodemus struggles.
Through the water of mankind and of the Spirit of the Most Holy God, we can be reborn into the kingdom of God, into the new creation that is underway and was seen before the old creation came to be. As it was with Esau and Jacob, the first born loses his blessing and the second born inherits his birthright. We are reborn as new creatures, shaped by the Spirit and loved by God. The old will pass away and the new appear. Heaven and earth will become one, and all of creation will rejoice.
1 Peter 1:23-25
since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; 24 for
“All flesh is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
and the flower falls,
25 but the word of the Lord remains forever.”
And this word is the good news that was preached to you.
1 John 5:18-20
We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.
19 We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.
20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
