1 Peter 2:13-17 (MSG)
13 Make the Master proud of you by being good citizens. Respect the authorities, whatever their level;
14 they are God's emissaries for keeping order.
15 It is God's will that by doing good, you might cure the ignorance of the fools who think you're a danger to society.
16 Exercise your freedom by serving God, not by breaking the rules.
17 Treat everyone you meet with dignity. Love your spiritual family.
Our life should reflect our submission to God. Being humble in our perception of self and treating others with love and respect are signs of the presence of God within. We are called to be good citizens by doing good works. Doing good works comes from the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, Who empowers our will to live and do as Christ.
This does not mean that we subject ourselves to darkness, for we are to be the light of the world. On the contrary, we are to seek justice and right in the world around us. We are to express the heart of God in love to a world often filled with hate. We are to seek justice for all in a world which seems to turn on the axis of selfishness. We are to be the hand of God to offer comfort for those in need. This is the way shown by Jesus. By these things we show ourselves to be good citizens of the kingdom.
