To Bear Witness - John 1:6-8

John 1:6-8
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

John was the greatest prophet born of woman under the old covenant. His purpose was to prepare the way for The Lord, in much the same way that Israel was to give witness to their God.

He came as a witness to bear witness of the light of the world.  He was not in the kingdom of God, for it had not yet arrived. The light had not yet ascended to His throne in heaven.  Those in the coming kingdom would walk in that light and bear witness.  They were born of woman, but reborn from above.  Like Moses looking at the promised land from afar, John see the kingdom was not far away.

John was not the light, as we are not the light, but His light is within us in the form of the Holy Spirit.  We become the Lamp-stand for the light of the world.  His light shines on us and through us.

John's purpose was to enable belief in the one to come; to pave the way and draw attention to the Savior of the world.  He would do this.
