Fifth Day -Genesis 1:20-23

Genesis 1:20-23 ESV
And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.” 21 So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.

Genesis 1:20-23 LXX

God turns His attention from the dry land and brings forth living creatures to fill the sky and the seas. In the Septuagint, the Greek for the creatures in the sea is defined as reptile, a creeping animal. As the night preceded day, living creatures in the sky and sea appear before creatures of the earth.
They receive a similar blessing to the one later given to Adam and Eve, the difference being Adam and Eve were charged with subduing the earth. In both cases they are to be fruitful and fill the earth. Our charge as followers of Christ is to be fruitful and multiply, in numbers and from glory to glory, to reach the full measure of of our Lord. Jesus and His Bride will succeed where Adam and Eve failed.

The sea and everything in it was good when created, but one day a devious creature entered the world causing mayhem and death. In Isaiah 27 we see reference to that beast of rebellion. There the twisting serpent is found in the sea, just as the dragon is present in the world, in the waters of man. Satan left for a while after Jesus resisted him in the wilderness. Jesus will return as the King of Kings for the final battle with our adversary. He will be thrown out of the world like he was cast out of heaven, though this time to his final destruction. The sea will be no more. Creation will be better than before, for nothing unclean will enter the New Jerusalem.

Isaiah 27:1
1 In that day the Lord with his hard and great and strong sword will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan the twisting serpent, and he will slay the dragon that is in the sea.

Genesis 1:28
And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

Ezekiel 36:11
And I will multiply on you man and beast, and they shall multiply and be fruitful. And I will cause you to be inhabited as in your former times, and will do more good to you than ever before. Then you will know that I am the Lord.
