Mark 1:7-8 ESV
7 And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. ”
Baptism with the Holy Spirit is superior to water for it is accomplished with the living water.
Just as Jesus is superior to John, so are their respective baptisms.
John's baptism represents the preparation for the Son of God as expressed in the Old Testament. The baptism of Jesus ushers in the new covenant with God. He turns water into wine.
This baptism is poured out from heaven, rain for a parched earth, the flame whose light guides us into the things of God and secures His own.
Jesus did not use water. That was the task of His disciples, a thing that pointed to what He was about to do. It would not be a sprinkling or immersion in water. His baptism would be a deeper thing and take place on the inside. It would cleanse the heart.
