He's Got Us Covered

Genesis 18:13-15
13 Then the Lord said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh and say, 'Will I really have a child, now that I am old?' 14 Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year and Gen 18:13-15Sarah will have a son." 15 Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, "I did not laugh." But he said, "Yes, you did laugh."
NIV

Being afraid causes us to do many things to hide and protect ourselves. Our guilt or shame, whether it is real or imagined, separates us from God, others, and our true self. Fear is the opposite of peace. In the garden story in Genesis, fear immediately arises from disobedience causing Adam and Eve to hide when they hear the Lord coming. Peace is shattered.

They try to cover themselves with a leaf under the Lord’s gaze. Here Sarah tries to cover herself with a lie, the leaf of choice outside the garden, but it is of no avail. God sees through all our attempts to hide, cover, or excuse ourselves. He is intimate with all our secrets.

Instead of despair, this is a cause for joy and relief because nothing is too hard for the Lord. Just as He gave Sarah a son according to the promise given Abraham, He gave you and I a Son that enables us to overcome fear and have new life. In Christ we find at last the cover and peace we seek. That’s what it means to be in Christ. He’s got us covered.
