1 John 5:1-5 ESV
1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. 4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world— our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
God's love is for everyone, but not everyone loves God. John tells us that loving God is accomplished by believing and obeying Jesus. Responding to God in this way means that one has overcome the world, and is thus born of God. We participate in the victory of Jesus and His reconciliation with a world gone astray. We leave behind its fallen precepts and assumptions and cling to His word. Our faith in God is the key that opens the door to belief. Our belief grows stronger and our faith is confirmed as we walk in His light, experiencing His love and presence. In the end, our sorrows and troubles teach us of His love and grace. Everything works for the good for those that love The Lord. We give witness to the power and effectual working of that love. We can find joy therein.
Galatians 5:6
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.
Matthew 22:37-40
And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
Romans 10:9-11
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”
1 Peter 1:22-23
Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;
