John 5:22-24 ESV
The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
John tells us that all judgement is given to the Son. God does this out of love. His justice and perfection would otherwise require the penalty of death for all marked with the stain of sin. His Son washes away that stain with the cleansing power of His own blood. We are blessed through His sacrifice and intervention. His mercy is made new everyday.
We are told that we are already judged by the word or law, and found wanting. We have everyone fallen short and our situation hopeless, except for the offer of grace that opens the door to life. The judgement of wrath has already taken place. Disobedience ensured that this is the case. The judgement of life remains. The offer has been made. The choice is ours.
Acts 17:30-32
The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”
32 Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked. But others said, “We will hear you again about this.”
1 John 2:23-25
No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also. 24 Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that he made to us — eternal life.
1 John 3:14-15
We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. 15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
