Matthew 2:1-5 ESV

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. The source of all wisdom is the Lord. This gives a hint of God’s intent to include all people in His mercy and grace. The wise men seem to be more learned in Jewish prophecy than the Jews.

The rising star in the east may signify the first coming of the Lord, just as the rising sun may signify His second coming. They both rise in east and bring their light into the world.

All of Jerusalem is troubled by this news. As the people of God, they should not be taken by surprise by the long awaited birth of their King and Messiah. To hear this news from the mouth of a gentile would be beyond the comprehension of Jewish thought and belief.
