Childbirth - 8:22-23

Romans 8:22-23 ESV

For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.

A child in the womb might wonder if there is life after birth, and it is no different for us in wondering if there is life after death. In birth and death we leave behind a world of darkness and small beginnings to enter the light of full existence. We become who we are.

Many do not acknowledge there is life before birth, that it doesn’t exist unless we can see it. Many do not acknowledge there is life after death, that it doesn’t exist unless we can see it. It is the darkness of the world that blinds the eye in both cases.

One day all of creation will participate in the light of the world and creation will be complete. One day the children of light will find full participation with the light of the world and the creation of man into image of God will be complete.

Childbirth foreshadows and provides us with a concept of God’s purpose in creation which is the birth of the children of light, the body of Christ. It is bringing His light and life into the darkness of creation.
