Romans 8:16-17 ESV
The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
How do we suffer with Him?
When we follow His path as He leads the way. The Holy Spirit led Jesus into and through the wilderness after His baptism. We begin our journey through the wilderness upon our baptism. Until then we are part of the wilderness, and therefore unable to journey through it.
It is in that journey we suffer with Him, for He is with us. We suffer because we are new creatures in an old world which is no longer our world. We share His suffering because He was a new Spirit walking in the flesh of this world, just as our new spirit walks in the flesh of this world.
Our spirits long for our new home. He has provided the way.
