A New Earth - 2 Peter 3:10-13

2 Peter 3:10-13 ESV

But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.

Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

The heavens will be burned up and the cosmos will be shaken and its elements loosened. The fire of the Lord will expose the earth and the works done on it. The earth is not so much destroyed as it is refined. The dross and impurities which have increased over time will be extracted and a new earth will emerge. The eyes of the Lord will judge all things and all things will be set right.

A new heaven and a new earth will come together in righteousness, even as the inhabitants of the kingdom of heaven are united with their new and resurrected bodies. The earth will be "resurrected" to the fullness and beauty originally intended as the eternal dwelling place of the children of God.

The fire has been lit and it burns even now in the children of light, the body of Christ.

1 Corinthians 3:13-14

each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward.
